The annual conference of the German Society for Mass Spectrometry (DGMS) 2020 will take place on the Natural Science campus of the University of Münster. The campus is in walking distance to the historical city of Münster (about a 15 minute walk).

Münster is a multifaceted city that combines science and learning with culture, history and art. It has the highest bicycles-per-inhabitant ratio of Germany and is dedicated towards climate protection for more than 30 years. Thanks to its more than 45,000 students, Münster is considered a young city and is an outstanding place to live in, work and research. As such, it has been awarded with the LivCom Award of 2004, making it one of the world’s most livable cities.

Founded more than 1200 years ago, Münster can look back at a rich history. It has been a diocesan town since the middle ages, was a member of the economically important Hanseatic league and was the capital of the Prussian district of Westphalia. Most notably, however, Münster is known as the City of the Westphalian Peace, because of a treaty signed there in 1648 that ended the Thirty Years’ War.

Despite the severe damage to the city during World War II, Münster and its historic center were reconstructed in the 1950s. Today, the combination of old street networks and modern buildings attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world.
With its more than 300,000 inhabitants, Münster is among the most economically and scientifically important cities in the northwestern part of Germany. As such, it is readily accessible by train, car or plane. It hosts the University of Münster and the University of Applied Sciences among several other research facilities, providing education and research for more than 45,000 students and over 7000 scientific employees in more than 180 disciplines.

As a city of historic significance that combines culture and art with the modern way of living, Münster provides many opportunities for sightseeing, shopping, dining and outdoor activities. We cordially invite you to discover Münster during your stay!
